Who is Premarital Counseling For
Premarital counseling is for couples that are doing well and want to make minor adjustments or reaffirm their decision for further commitment. Relationships are complex and our premarital assessment will help identify areas you may not realize need attention and highlight your strengths as a couple. It allows you to feel confident that you and your partner have the skills to navigate life's challenges as a team. At Authentic Connections we are to learn to navigate these issues.
The Process
During this process, you and your partner will meet with one of our well-trained premarital therapists for a first session to learn about your relationship story. Then your therapist will provide an assessment that has been shown to help strengthen relationships. The next few sessions will be spent reviewing the assessment and addressing any growth areas that emerge. This type of counseling is designed to be brief and typically lasts 3 – 8 sessions.
We are currently offering in-person sessions at our DTC and Lower Highlands office and virtual sessions.

Why Premarital Counseling is Important
If your relationship already feels like it is pretty healthy and normal why would I attend premarital counseling? This is often a question couples ask when contemplating all of the other wedding expenses they have to cover during this time. However, research supports that premarital counseling is correlated with increased marriage satisfaction and decreased chance of divorce. And isn't the whole point of getting married about the marriage?
Benefits of Premarital Counseling
Even the healthiest relationships can benefit from a third-party expert talking them through how to make relationships satisfying long term. Often healthy couples say "We are so in love now, I want this feeling to last the whole marriage."
That's exactly what makes premarital counseling important! It takes the love you already have, identifies hurdles to the love continuing, and provides instruction on how other happy couples keep the love going throughout the years. It is much easier to keep a relationship on track than to correct a relationship that goes off the rails.
Deal with Issues Before They Become Problems
If you feel very committed to your relationship but feel like you are starting to notice some issues you want to address, that is completely normal! Relationship concerns especially arise during times of transition such as moving in together, planning a wedding, starting a family, or having issues with your family. Premarital counseling can help you identify your strengths to lean on during these times and help you reconnect to your partner, so you can communicate through these stressful times!
Who Should Not Attend Premarital Counseling?
If you and your partner are experiencing significant relationship issues or stressors, couples counseling at Authentic Connections Therapy and Wellness may be a better choice. It will allow for more time and focus on the specific issues that need to be addressed.
If wedding planning or other issues related to a deeper commitment with your partner are creating distress individual relationship counseling at Authentic Connections Therapy and Wellness can be beneficial. individual therapy will allow you to have time to focus on what are your own anxieties and what aspects you may want to discuss with your partner in premarital counseling or couples counseling.
Relationships and commitment can bring up unresolved issues and you may need additional support during this time. If you are unsure what would be the best choice at this time book a phone consultation and we will help find the best fit for your individual needs.
Prepare and Enrich Assessment
The assessment used in our process is developed by Prepare and Enrich. The Prepare and Enrich assessment has been thoroughly studied and researched. Through this assessment couples are able to identify key problem areas that may negatively impact their relationship in the future. This assessment can also help highlight areas that the couple excels at and can use to help propel them during difficult seasons of their marriage. The assessment covers topic areas of:
Communication
Conflict
Partner Style and Habits
Financial Management
Leisure Activities
Sexual Expectations
Family/Friends
Relationship Roles
Spirituality
Our trained therapists will help guide the two of you through these topics and provide skills of how to grow and strength your foundation. Couples who have completed this assessment reported that they felt more confident about their relationship, engaged in more positive conflict management, and felt more satisfied in their relationship.
